How to choose a personal trainer in Santa Barbara
Five questions to ask any personal trainer in Santa Barbara before you hire them — and the red flags that mean you should walk away.
Hiring a personal trainer is a big commitment — both financially and physically. Here's how to find the right one for you in Santa Barbara, and what to watch out for.
1. What certifications do you hold?
At minimum, look for one of these: NASM-CPT (National Academy of Sports Medicine), NSCA-CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist), or ACE-CPT. If you're over 50 or coming back from an injury, look for additional credentials like NASM Corrective Exercise Specialist or ISSA Exercise Therapist.
2. How many years have you been training real clients?
A certification is the floor, not the ceiling. Ten years of training clients teaches you things no course can — how to spot compensation patterns, modify on the fly, and program around someone's actual life.
3. Can I do a trial session before committing?
Any good trainer offers a half-price or free intro session. If they only sell big packages up front, that's a red flag. You should know what working with them feels like before you spend hundreds of dollars.
4. Where do you train clients?
In Santa Barbara, your real options are: a commercial gym (cheaper but crowded), a private studio (more focused), or in-home training (most convenient, fully private). The right answer depends on your schedule and how much intimidation you can tolerate.
5. Can I see your reviews?
Google reviews are the most honest signal — they're hard to fake at scale. Look for trainers with at least 20+ reviews and a 4.8+ rating. Read several, not just the first one.
Red flags to walk away from
Trainers who push supplements, who promise specific weight-loss results in a specific time, who only sell huge packages up front, who don't ask about your medical history, or who can't explain why they're having you do a given exercise. Walk away.
If you'd like to talk through your goals and see whether I'm a good fit, call or text (805) 364-2623. The first session is half price ($60) — no pressure, no pitch.
